How do HVAC UV lights work?
HVAC UV lights treat surfaces inside the air conditioner. They use shortwave (UV-C) radiation to sanitize the air that’s blown into a home. Mold, mildew, bacteria, and viruses are eradicated with this special technology. Because most of the bacteria breed within the air ducts, our specially trained technicians install UV light purifiers within the HVAC duct system.
Another bonus? Our UV light purifier also removes Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) that off-gas from paint and synthetic materials found inside many homes. Some examples of these materials are countertops, insulation, plywood, and furniture stains. Off-gassing from VOCs can cause health problems including allergic reactions, sinus problems, headaches, dizziness, and nausea. The side effects of VOCs can last for years inside a home, and that’s why it’s so important to have an HVAC UV light installed as soon as possible, to prevent any further effects.
Do HVAC UV lights kill germs and viruses like Covid-19?
A recent Columbia University Irving Medical Center study showed more than 99.9% of seasonal Coronaviruses exposed to ultraviolet light in the form of air droplets were destroyed. As a result, the study authors concluded that UVC light is an effective method of limiting airborne viruses.
Do HVAC UV lights also remove odors?
Yes, our UV light purifier also removes odors that not only smell bad, but damage surfaces in your home, like mold and mildew.
What type of UV lights does Modern Air use in homes?
We use Air Scrubber and Apco. These are trusted and effective UV lights that sanitize entire homes. We use them because they work the best and are the most effective.
How long does the HVAC UV light treatment last?
As part of our maintenance plan, Modern Air replaces UV lights every 9,000 hours or every 12 months, which is what the manufacturer and recommended guidelines suggest.
How are UV lights installed in HVAC systems?
HVAC UV lights are installed in the ductwork in order to sterilize returning air, as well as kill germs, bacteria, viruses, mold, and mildew.
Is it safe to DIY a UV light installation for an AC or furnace?
Though there are valuable benefits to using UVC light to clean the air in your home and protect the ones you love, we strongly caution against installing one in your HVAC system yourself.
The FDA warns against UV light installation by anyone other than professionals because they come with a high risk of burns to skin and eyes, and can cause radiation exposure. Improper installation increases these risks.
The condition of your HVAC system determines how clean your home’s air is. If mold, bacteria, or viruses are inside your air conditioning ducts, they will spread throughout your home and the air you breathe.
At Modern Air, we’d like to help your home’s air keep you healthy.
